Complete HT newbie, can't get my system setup.

Greetings all, I am new to home theater, please bear with me as I try to explain myself . I recently bought a Sony Wega projection TV (Don't remember all the specifics of it, but can post them if needed).

I bought an Onkyo theater in a box system for it and spent almost an entire day trying to set that up. All I want to use on this system is a DVD player, Playstation 3, and to watch TV. I could only get the DVD player to work out of the speakers. I got sound to come from the PS3, but no picture, and could only get picture from the cable TV, no sound.

I returned the system out of complete frustration, and bought a JVC theater in a box with DVD player as part of the package (I thought this would be a simpler solution). Same exact thing happened. Can only get the DVD player to work, no TV, no PS3. I should add that I was just using the RCA type connectors for everything.

I followed the instructions to a tee, even called the store to try and get a walk through, no help there. Any ideas what I could have done wrong? I just want to be able to watch TV, movies, and use the PS3. ANy help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

I'm a newb myself but I'll at least TRY to help out ... I don't have a lot of information to go on so I may need to ask you for more info ....

------------------------------------------

First lets start with the PS3. When you configured the PS3 and set the video type what type of connection did you specify ... HDMI, component, composite, etc.?? When you told the PS3 about your TV set did you check off the right settings [like widescreen, 1080i, 720P, or whatever your set defaults to]?

You may be better off not connecting the video of the PS3 to the JVC HTiB but instead connect the video from the PS3 straight up to one of the connectors on your TV. Then you can use your TV's remote control to pick which input source to display.

If you had sound before hopefully now you can also get the picture.

-----------------------------------------

As for regular TV signals that could be a little problematic esp. if you want the sound for the TV to be played on your new HTiB speakers. If you have a cable box that has RCA cables coming out of it I would ASSUME that you could connect it to one of the inputs on your HTiB. Then with the HTiB remote you should be able to select which input source you want to listen to. On the other hand if your TV signals are coming in over a coax cable / something not RCA then things get more complicated. It is likely still dooable but I'd like to know more about your TV model before I go further.

NOTE: Because I'm not familiar with your TV, HTiB system, or even the PS3 my recommendations could be garbage but I suspect that they're probably pretty close. If you let me know about your TV model / HTiB model / how the TV signal is coming in [coax / cable box / etc.] I might be able to help more.

----------------------------------------------------------------

EDIT: I assume Sony has good tech support and because the PS3 and the TV are both Sony maybe they could at least help out with the PS3 -> TV picture issue. I'd try the PS3 support group first then [if they can't help] the TV support group next.

Thank you for your help. I think I may have had one simple video wire plugged in wrong. The instructions were unclear on that part!
