Complete Home Theater Build Plans

Hello,

I'm new to the speaker building world for the most part and was wondering if anyone could guide me to a full set of plans for a 5.1 setup.

I'm looking to build something that would be good for movies and music and was thinking I'd like to go with floor standing front speakers and smaller bookshelf or surround speakers, along with a center channel and sub of course. I've seen plans here and there for floor standing speakers and subs and center channels etc... but not a full set of plans for a 5.1 system (with front floor standing speakers). I would probably start with the smaller rear speakers and see how they go before building the larger/more complicated front and center channel speakers.

Have any good links?

Your project is feasible. Do you realize it will be a huge amount of work?

I know of no complete set of plans, as you request.

Have you any idea currently about speaker design, types of loading and how they work? Do you have any understanding of crossover topology and design?

I assume you have woodworking skills or you would not have posted this request. Do have have skills at putting circuits together, and soldering?

I ask this as now I'm retired, I need some projects and I'm in the early stages of R & D to produce what you are asking for, for these forums. The center will be what I'm using now. The design of the mains should be finished by this weekend. I have to do the build and cutting plans. However they will have to be prototyped. I plan on having the mains as a finished design, before going on to surrounds and sub. So this is somewhat of a long term project.

Now to the most important question, what is your budget?

I have one member enthused about this project already, so if you want to come along for the ride also, you are welcome. By the way it will be TL based and have no commercial equivalent, which will make it a neat project and give you something unusual to show off. This will add to the constructional complexity.

New Guy,
Are you looking for articles to help you purchase and layout the room for a 5.1 system, or do you intend to design the speakers? Regardless of your intentions, come up with a budget for the speakers and electronics.

If you are insterested in an HT DIY project, consider doing the the wiring, building acoustic pannels or a DIY subwoofer. Designing the speakers is not a good project for a beginner. There are some kits that allow you to follow plans and assemble components, but it wont necessarily save money by going this route.

How much will the system you're designing run?

To the OP, if you're looking for a kit that has already been designed, that you can just put together, I highly recommend GR Research. John Garcia has a system comprised of their bookshelfs, and I can vouch that they sound damn good. They're pretty reasonably priced also.

About $242 in electronic parts for the two mains. For the center $190 or $320 depending on options.

I have not got to the sub or surrounds. I would like to do a TL sub for the Kappa perfect 10 or 12 VQ, but they might prove a little pricey. I'm not selecting any junk drivers. The fronts and mains are all selected from SEAS. I have not got around to selecting the drivers for the surrounds.

I have to say the modeling for the mains is most encouraging, and I will be starting the construction plans shortly.

The center was done two years ago.

It would be nice to come out below $1000 for all electronic parts, but the most important thing is to have a system that is accurate, providing a superior level of performance at the same time giving good value for money.

In my opinion, go with it, even if it's pricey.

After all, if they want a different sub it will be easy to find something; there are many DIY plans and kits for more conventional sealed and ported designs, but how available are TL subs?

We will see how it works out.

That's not bad at all.

My woodworking skills are somewhat limited. I did put together a Rythmik sub box with my limited tools. I'm actually planning to build another one in the near future. All I have is a Black & Decker Workmate bench, a jigsaw, a sander and various other basic tools.

I kind of know how to solder and have a soldering iron, but I've only done it a couple of times.

Hopefully your desings won't be over my head. But we'll see. feel free to PM me when you get things buttoned up.
