Oh i was also wondering if the pioneer VSX-81TXV is better than the yamaha rx-v659.
ps. i am not that concerned about HDMI. just great sound and surround clarity

I have not heard the receivers you mention, but my view is that within a given price range the receivers will sound pretty much the same. I would base my purchase on the features I want/need on my receiver.
