compact speaker suggestions

Hello Audioholics,

Need some help deciding on a good pair of
compact speakers to buy. I just bought a 50"
Panasonic plasma, have a yamaha 5860 rec, and a
Sony progressive dvd player.
I currently have klipsch quintet (the first ones) speakers for my
front, rear and center. I have a polk psw 250
subwoofer. the living room is 12' by 16'. I want something
that will sound a little better then just good for movies and music,
but moslty for movies.
I have been thinking about the Athena micra 6, I can buy them online
for 250. are there any klipsch that are good. I have heard many
people on this forum suggest that the klipsch quintet III are not good. I have never had a problem with mine.
by the way the budget is 400-500.
If I missed anything that could help let me know and any other suggestions
are appreciated.

Thanks,
justme

P.S. sorry if i doulbe posted this,
it sent me to the login screen the first
time.

Welcome!

It sounds like you've already made some solid purchases and haven't gotten sucked into the Bose BS. Good job.

Quick questions:
Will you be needing a subwoofer with the new set?
How compact is "compact"?

Thanks,

I would be open to a new subwoofer, I would get ride of the Polk if the speakers came with a better one. By compact I mean small like the klipsch,
not floor standing (wife thinks those takes away from the thin plasma look).
something to fit on my current speaker stands. Did I answer your question?

I also live in an apartment building so i want something that will sound
good at a low level but also good at a high level. Is that possible?

While they are larger than your Quintets, I think a setup of quality bookshelves would work nicely with your budget. I would recommend Phase Tech Teatros or the BIC DV62 line.

The Teatros:

http://onecall.com/LandingPage.aspx?lpID=51

And their own product page: http://phasetechnology.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?page=41

And here's where to buy the BIC Bookshelves:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00006JPDI/qid=1133570842/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-6667275-2999944?n=507846&s=electronics&v=glance

And the Center:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009WBYL/qid=1133570842/sr=8-2/ref=pd_bbs_2/104-6667275-2999944?n=507846&s=electronics&v=glance

Either option will sound excellent. If you're unsure of what you'd like to do, you could try to find a store that stocks the speakers in your area, or, if you like, order a pair and see how they sound to you.

Thanks Jaxvon,

I think i'm might go with the teatro, 4-4.5's and the 6.5 as the center.
do you got a good sub suggestion for the future that will put the finishing touch on this system.

Thanks again,
Justmegee

I'd personally suggest the best model you can afford from Hsu. I have their entry-level STF-1 and I'm very impressed with it. It has a tight, clean sound and does a good job putting bass into my room. Check out their offerings:

You could find the Velodyne Deco system within that price range is you look around.

Comes with a 1200watt 8inch subwoofer :)

Its 699 in canada, so its probly way cheaper in the states.

A recent visit to the Home Theater Direct site, revealed that they are now making an on-wall speaker set. You might consider checking the set out, due to your size constraints.

If I had to choose between on-wall or micro speakers, I'd look at the on-wall speakers.

Which hsu sub do you think will be the right fit,
Stf-1 or stf-2 the room is 12' by 16’ or is the
Polk psw250 good enough. Remember I live
in an apartment building so I cant use something that will
shake the building lose :). I want good bass that I can
control when I need to.

Thanks for the recommendations t2t and sheep but already
bought the teatro, 4-4.5's and the 6.5 as the center. Waiting
for the plasma, backordered, to hook it all up. Will let you
guys know how it turns out. onecall has super fast shipping.

Thanks,
justgee

I would go for the STF-2 if you can afford it. The STF-1 isn't a slouch, but it might be a tad small for your room. BTW, how do the teatros sound so far? If you can afford more, you might also think about the SVS PB-10ISD. It has lower extension than the Hsu, but you pay for it.

The stf-2 is what I was kind of
thinking also but the svs pbd-10isd is only
30 dollars more i'll have to look into that.
either way I’ll still have to wait
to buy either one. got to save some more
money. Thanks..

Waiting for the plasma to get
here before I put the speakers
up but as soon as I do I will
let you all know how they sound.
i'm confident they will be superb.

Thanks again,

.....two supporting the soundstage and you're done....Brian, you ole' Videoholic hurricane-dodgin' kinda' guy, now that you've had two quality subs up front for awhile, do you have any more settled and laid-in observations and conclusions?......

This will probably sound dumb to
most of you but will I need a sub  if I
decide to return 2 teatro 4.5 for 2
floor standing 7.5? I think I can convince
my wife into letting me get the 7.5's.
What’s the difference between the 4.5 and
7.5 besides the obvious. bass, sound, etc.
and can anyone recommend good speaker stands
for the 4.5s

Thanks holics

Klipsch has some very small reference series speakers out now the RF10. I have not heard them myself, but have heard good things about them for a compact speaker

The speaker choice is up to you, but if you really watch a lot of movies, you'll NEED a subwoofer. How much do you think you can invest in a subwoofer right now?
