My dad is looking to get a 5.1 receiver for his living room that is small in physical size, but still has HDMI, can do HD sound, etc. He's moving his Onkyo 6-something series receiver to his basement theater room because it was just way too imposing for their smallish living room. The setup of the room doesn't really allow for any remote-placement options, either, so he's looking for something more compact that will still be fine for doing Blu-Ray and digital cable with his plasma TV and will sound good with the Aperion 4-series speakers he already has in place.
Any suggestions? Price isn't really the driving factor, but I'd guess sub-$500.
