Hi all,
I am currently using a 6 year old Pioneer dvd player that plays at 480i.
I was going to buy the Toshiba HD-A1 but just not ready to pull the trigger and will probably wait a year or so for a variety of reasons not really applicable to this thread.
I have been doing some reading and research for a new dvd player in the $200 range and like what I read about the Oppo 971h.
Based on what I have been reading, heavily weighted by the DVD Player Benchmark in Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity, it seems the 971 is the way to go for me.

I am looking for feedback from those that own this model or the 970 and their opinions of it. My current tv has only DVI, component, etc. and will not be replaced for another year.

Thanks for your feedback,
Kai

I was using POS budget players for awhile, waiting for some reason before pulling the trigger on a Pioner DV-588. got ready to buy the 588, and decided to try the Oppo 970 instead. Love the machine.

My wife, who claims to not be able to see or hear any difference in anything, commented the other day how much she enjoyed watching movies with the new player. She was stuck at home one day and decided to have a video day. Called me and told me she could see and hear a difference. That was huge!

Enjoy,
X

I bought a 970 for myself and I love it! For the quality I got, the price is amazing. Definitely worth buying!

A long time friend/audio buddy of mine has the 971. It looks stellar on both his dlp pj and lcd tv. Using the component outs is nice but the dvi digi signal is nicer. A superb picture. The 971 has dvi out but not hdmi. Read some current threads concerning the new 981 coming out in just a couple of weeks. It is built on the same platform as the awesome 971 but now has hdmi(you could still use for video purposes with a dvi cable and adaptor combo or a dvi/hdmi cable), plays sacd's in addition to dvd-a, upconverts to 1080p, and is black in color. I have read it will not support component video as it will not even have the jacks for them. Digital only. I was told by Oppo that price will be about the same as 971. The Oppo is a no brainer for vid quality and has some mixed reviews concerning music quality. IMO, it sounds great for music cd's and dvd audio surround music as is but if video is your main concern you can't go wrong. Good luck and happy viewing/listening.
