when i move into the new house in 73 days i have no choice but to go w/ direct tv. currently i have comcast although it is not digital comcast. my question is how come the picture through comcast is sometimes very clear and looks good through out the house then once in awhile the picture will be very snowy looking and last a few days like that.

You will like satellite much better

DirecTv will be much clearer than Comcast when you move.

However, that wasn't you question. Sometimes on cable if your signal level is low or if you have a lot of splitters you get static pcitre when signal level is low. If you were going to stay with cable there are two solutions: (1) if you main signal level coming into the hous is low then you would nned to contact the cable compnay. If you have a lot of splitters ( a lot of TV or potential TV connections you are running signal too) then it is easy and inexpnsive to put in some signal amplifiers.

Anyway satelitte DishNetwork or DirecTv will give you much clearer pQ on all channels.

how do i test the signal coming in the main room to see if it is low? also there are a good amount of splitters i believe 3 or 4. also does the signal level vary from day to day strong one day then weak another?

First off, you really have no way top test the signal strength of the signal coming in, That takes fairly special gear ehich, AFAICT, only their people have access to. Not that you can't buy it somewhere, but it's not really economically feasable, and then there's the little matter of learning how to use it.

Second, that's a lot of splitters in your house! Remember that a digital signal is more "forgiving" of signal glitches. Considering you're depending on an analog signal which can vary somewhat from day-to-day, I'm surprised you get as clear a signal on all those sets as you do. It's not expected to drive too many sets.

But, the upside of analog is that you don't need special equipment to get it over cable (dunno about next year, though) because your TV's internal NTSC tuner can receiver it and you can easily split the signal as many times as you can get away with.

Now, when you go satellite, I think you're gonna need a set-top-box for each TV you connect to it. Your TV's internal tuners don't work for satellite or any digital signal, except perhaps for unscrambled cable digital signals if your provider allows that and you have a QAM tuner.

Yes, with DirecTV a box is required for every TV. Dish has receivers that can control two TV's but only one set would get an HD signal.

To clarify, a satellite receiver can only tune one station at a time (except for some that have dual tuners, like Hi Ho mentioned). Also, TVs don't have the ability to decode the raw satellite feed, so you need a satellite receiver to do that.

So, if you won't be watching more than one station at a time, you would only need one receiver. However, you do need a way to get the audio/video signal from the receiver to the other TV in your bedroom. If Directv is willing to install more than one receiver without charging you extra (or an extra fee per month for the extra receivers), then there's really no reason not to have another one in the bedroom. They used to charge an extra $5 per receiver per month back when I had their service...don't know what they do now. You would just need to decide if it's worth any extra fees for that second receiver versus sending the A/V signals from the main receiver to the TV in the bedroom.

Do you have to go with DirecTV? If you can install DisHNetwork, either of their DVRs 622 or 722 support two TVs with one receiver. On is HD and the other SD and the second TV is wireless to the other receiver with a wall video cable connection. The reason I ask if you have a open view of the Suothern sky to install DirecTV you should also be able to support DishNetwork satellite ;)

To access system info with your set top box from comcast, while the power is on hit POWER, SELECT, SELECT. This will give you a full range of diagnostic tools, as well as what your signal strength is comming in;)
