Comcast audio levels

This has probably been asked before but couldn't find it searching the forums, I am having a problem with Comcast and the audio levels of the commercials.

Commercials increase to "headache" level while normal programing has no problem.

I have the Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD using a Toslink cable into my Marantz SR7500.

I am sure Comcast is purposely boosting audio levels for commercials.

I was wondering if anyone has contacted Comcast with any success or knows of a workaround with the set top box settings?

Thanks,
Jim

FYI... I am in Central NJ

I think it mostly has to do with the people who create the audio for the commercials themselves; how it was recorded.

I remember, quite a while back, there was a poster here at AH who said that was his job. He said he tried to tame down the compression some, and that he nearly lost his job for even attempting to do so.

The companies that hire the ad agencies want their commercials at maximum compression.

If it bothers you, use a DVR and FF, or just hit the mute button. You can also set DRC to maximum wherever it pleases you, in the cable box, receiver, etc.

Jim...being in Central NJ myself...I can relate to what you are experiencing. What I have noticed is that it is the local commercials that are broadcast in extra loud mode and not the standard network ads.

I actually just traded in my SA 8300HD for their (Comcast's) new line of HD boxes...the Cisco RNG200 DVR...and still have the same problem...

Between us mortals, DRC called in receivers called something like "Late Night mode".
I got cablevision HD and commercials are always ultra compressed, especially the locals ones

This has been the practice for a very long time now:mad: But, there seems to be an answer soon, legislative one:D

My issue is the levels between stations. or even the left and right channels of some station are way off. Response from corp? Not an issue.

I had Comcast for quite a few years and recently switched to Fios but this problem still exists so it doesn't really have anything to do with your provider. In addition to what other posts state, I've also noticed that some programs that are in dolby digital switch to pro logic during commercials. This also seems to produce a louder, though inferior sound.
