college speaker upgrade from pioneer cs-m551's

I bought these from a salvation army for 60 bucks thinking they might be worth it, I can't really tell if there good or not because I don't have much to compare them too, and I don't want to be sold off showroom floor acoustics and good amplification.

I have a pioneer receiver (vsx-518) that in the manual says it does

"Stereo: Continuous average power output of 95 watts at 8 ohms, from 20 Hz to 20 kHz with no more than 0.2 % total harmonic distortion."

I can see the speakers front panel is peeling out and seperating away from the rest of the box.

I just want to know if spending 500 dollars on bookshelf speakers is going to make a huge difference, should I consider other options? I eventual plan on going all out with a nice amplifier and floor speakers, hopefully monitor audio's.

I have a 20ft x 20ft living room, mostly music will be hip-hop played off the computer.

You could look at the Infinity Primus 362 in that price range. That would offer your best bang for buck for a 2 channel setup.

do you think I would be better off with the floor standers like the p32's which I see recomended in almost every budget inquiry, and I am definatley considering.

But also weighing other options such as putting that money into bookshelves.

I like the look of the aperion intimus 6b bookshelf here:

They look like they have a nice finish similar to the monitor audio bookshelves I really wanted, which i think were 125 bucks extra for white. which I really liked.

The aperion seem to have decent reviews. Any way, thanks for your help, I just want to get as much feedback and searching in so I am happy with my purchase, unlike before with my noobie buy reciever and cheap speakers.

Does it really matter what speakers you get with hip hop? i mean you have a sub thats all that matters. i have a pair of CS-M551's and i know for a fact they can play synthisized clicks all day long.

Those Pioneer speakers are weak - and the woofer will burp
And you can forget about the 32hz response.

This is a good set of speakers, for a good price - Boston VR1 for $250
The Pioneer speakers can not touch these.
