A friend of mine was talking about the Coby CS-P94 150 Watt 5.1 channel home theater speaker system. Has anybody heard of this product?

Well, then.

I would think it's about as good as you can get for a $55 system, which isn't really too awful much.

I haven't heard that one but I did have the misfortune to have to help an unfortunate friend set up one amazingly similar to this from another company. He "won" it in a raffle. After all was said and done, it sucked. He repacked instantly. It's still in his garage. He doesn't have the nerve to unload it on anyone, even for free.

IMNSHO,I think your friend would be better off spending a little more and getting some computer speakers, even if it means saving for a while

OK. If it produces sound at least better than your average, mid-range clock radio, then it is a good deal. $55 for a pseudo-sub and 5 satellites is cheap if they produce sound at all. A decent clock radio costs at least that much for God's sake. If your budget is $55, I'd say you cannot do any better than that.

Well, I bought a Logitech sub/sat system for $40 as computer speakers (I don't listen to music on the computer mind you) but I played music just for the hell of it... god it sounded so horrible that I had to turn it off immediately.

But it has a "Blue LED Power Indicator" ...one of it's listed features. That's worth $55 in itself right there! :D

Truthfully?

The one we tried didn't.

It didn't play as loud as the original TV speakers nor did it sound as good. I'm not trying to rain on the guys parade to be mean. I'm just sharing an honest experience and trying to prevent a potential disappointment and perhaps talk him into saving up for something better rather than throw good money away.

Remember, my buddy didn't pay a penny for this and still refuses to use it. That should say something. But, hey, if he really, really wants it then he should go for it but at least he should have his eyes open going in. More power to him and I do hope his experience be better than ours.

Heck, if he's that horny for sound and has a limited budget but can live with a 2 channel system, then this will outperform that Coby, guaranteed. http://www.alteclansing.com/product_details.asp?pID=VS2221. It uses a 1/8" stereo mini plug (headphone jack) as an input but that should not be too much of a problem, I hope

Save up and buy the Z5500's. Its not that much more $ considering the sound it will output.

If you want to demo them, Best Buy and Circuit City usually have some setup. FutureShop if your in Canada.

COBY CS-P94 Incompetent company

Recently ordered the Coby CS-P94 5.1 speaker system The "on" led light does not come on at all, only 2 (right and left) speakers work at all no matter how or what components I connect it to, and those two have a constant loud hum emitting from them. The problem is Coby makes the customer pay for shipping to return the item AND requires a $12 money order with the return to ship out a replacement, with no option to replace it with something better. This basically means that I would be spending another $24-$30 to most likely receive another defective unit, which with my original purchase price totals over $80 for something I don't really want to own. Even their customer service department in Ohio at 800-727-3592 finally admitted they get numerous calls for this defective product (spoke to 5 different reps hoping for better assistance). That same number is listed as tech support, which it definitely is not. My basic knowledge is much more extensive than theirs. I have emailed the tech support link at cobyusa.com 4 times to attempt to troubleshoot the unit to verify it is defective, and have yet to receive a response. When I called Coby direct in Long Island, NY at 800-688-2629, they were utterly useless and only gave me a 718-412-4163 to call the Coby return department in Mastis (sp?), NY. Of course you only get a recording every time you call that doesn't even recognize the number as Coby, and simply says "leave a message". Tried that 10 times. Hope this review will forwarn buyers considering any Coby product purchase.
