Coaxial or Audio In 5.1ch?

I just purchased the Yamaha RX-V2500 bases on the recommendations in this forum but I am unsure about the best way to connect it to my DVD player. It looks like i have an option of connecting 1 coaxial cable from my player into the digital input in the amp or connecting to the MULTI CH INPUT jacks.

That is the way I have it now which is what the DVD manufaturer recommends, but it automatically turns off the digital sound field processor and i can no longer select sound field programs. Is that cool or would it sound better to just go with the 1 coaxial connection?

Any other recommendations on the set-up? I am powering my NHT 2.5i towers with an NAD power amp, an NHT sub with its amp, and power NHT center and Rear speakers with the Yamaha. I already had that stuff so is it overkill? Should I sell the power amp and just use the Yamaha for the fronts too? Thanks for our ideas.

Using the multi ch input jacks bypasses all of the circuitry inside the Yamaha except the power amplifier stage. My reccommendation would be to use the coaxial digital in, and use all or as little of the 2500's processing as is pleasing to your ear.

Is the multi ch inputs for SACD & DVD Audio? If so, it would make sense that the digital effects would be turned off when in multi ch. I just bought a Pioneer 56TXi and it does the same thing. My multi ch inputs are analog. If you do have SACD / DVD Audio capability I would certainly take advantage of it. I really wasn't expecting to be overly impressed w/ SACD, but I was amazed and I'm now a giant advocate for SACD!
