Hello everyone! I’m a newbie to Audioholics and this is my first post. Here’s my Home Theater System:

Cable = Comcast Coaxial (no cable box)
AV Receiver = Yamaha RX V663
HDTV = Toshiba 46XV545U

Coax. cable directly into my HDTV
TOSLINK out from HDTV & into AV Receiver

1. Is this the most optimal set-up for picture quality or should I run coax. cable into the AV Receiver with HDMI into the HDTV?
2. Any advice on getting the coax. cable into the AV Receiver without the cable box?

Thanks for the help.

You have it setup just right. There is no way to run coax cable into your receiver. The optimum setup would be to get a cable box and run HDMI into your receiver, then HDMI out to your tv, that is if you have an HDMI switching receiver, if not, then the optimum setup would be component video and toslink or s/pdif into your receiver, and component video out to your tv, or HDMI from cable box to tv, and either toslink or s/pdif into your receiver.

Check to make sure that your TV is passing the entire audio signal (5.1) and not just a stereo (2.0) single to your receiver.

Thanks GlocksRock... I'm now investigating a HD cable box. Any advice on how to connect the DVD player?

DVD = Sony DVP-NC665P (no HDMI)
AVR = Yamaha RX V663
HDTV = Toshiba 46XV545U

Component (R/G/B) out from DVD & into AV Receiver
TOSLINK out from DVD & into AV Receiver
HDMI out from AV Receiver & into HDTV

1. Should I run component (R/G/B) straight to the HDTV?

2. Is Coaxial Digital better then TOSLINK in this scenario?

Thanks for the help.

Yes. At least I would. Hey, you get to calibrate video per source input now.

Doesn't/shouldn't matter. I'd probably use optical myself, dunno why, maybe because I have an extra.

both toslink and s/pdif will give you the same quality, generally the connection is more solid with digital coax. As fasr as connecting your dvd player, you can either run it through your receiver, or straight to the tv. If you get a HD cable box, run everything through your receiver, and your reciver will output all of your video sources on HDMI, so that will be the only cable you need to run to your tv.

Thanks GlocksRock... I'm following your advice and will funnel all inputs throught the AVR with one HDMI out to the HDTV. I just upgraded to the Xbox 360 Elite with HDMI and was blown away by the picture quality. I couldn't help to configure my own 'Video Gaming' SCENE mode for the Yamaha RX-V663. Happy New Year and thanks again!
