This is my first visit to this forum. I have what I hope isn't to lame of a question, but here goes. My local cable provider sells an HDTV tuner that provides 1080i - 720p via HDMI or component video outputs. What I'm wondering is when and if 1080p is made available from a source other than blue ray DVD for example will the coaxial cable coming into my home support that and if so, would I then have to upgrade my HDTV tuner? Thanks.

That's a lot of speculation there.

WE really won't know until when and if it's available over cable but odds are that you will have to upgrade tour HDTV tuner, particularly if it's a cable or satellite box.

Are you referring to the physical cable going from the cable company to your house? I think it will carry 1080p.

But if 1080p becomes a common standard for HDTV, you would most likely need to upgrade your tuner, as it probably doesn't include support for 1080p.

The TV networks is where the 1080i-720p is coming from, not the source. The coaxial coming into your house has digital data coming from your cable company. Each channel broadcasts its information in either standard def or high def. They control the quality of picture they broadcast. That information is sent to your house. You have the ability to watch both. The cable company will charge more for you to receive the high def from them. A standard cable box can decode the inforamtion coming in through the coaxial cable and give you a picture, but it cannot decode high def.
A high def tuner, like the one you are talking about, can. Now depending on the technology of the tuner determines the picture quality. If it can decode 1080p it will give you any channel broadcasting in 1080p. If it cannot, like yours, it will make it the 1080p channels 1080i-720p.
Hope this helps.
