Need some opinions.

Great room size 17' X 22' with 18' ceiling.

Have about $300 to $400 to spend on receiver.

Currently have an old yamaha with pioneer speakers that sounds real bad in the room.

More then likely will have paradigm speakers.

Give me some opinions on receiver. Between yamaha and pioneer. New or refurbished.

Call me old fashioned, but I like the full warranty of new.

I personally like some of the extra "bells and whistles" of Yamaha but you might be able to get a better deal on the Pioneer.

I would check Harmon's ebay store for refurbed HK's. Still get a warranty.

Yamaha options

I pickup up the Yamaha HTR-5860 for about $320 new from an authorized dealer. This is probably about the minimum you should go with for your room. If you can stretch your budget to $500, I would recommend the RX-V1500.

P.S. Was the 18' ceiling a typo? If not you will need multiple high end subwoofers to fill that room.

Sorry about the double post.

Thats right, the room is 18' high. Plus it opens into a dining room and foyer. Also has a balcony looking into the room.

You may ask why a room like this has a small budget. Lets just say that when you build a home and go 60,000 over budget the equipment to fill spaces is limited.

My concern is power. Should I go 6.1 with more power or 7.1 with less to keep the cost down. If I go used or refurb I can get a better (more powerfull) model for my money. The sub is a paradigm 12".

For refurbished receivers

Check out the Harman Audio Store on Ebay. Also, ecost and ubid frequently offer good deals on refurbished Onkyo and Denon receivers. The HK and Onkyo receivers come with a good warranty while most of the Denon's give you 90 days.

I would recommend buying a 7.1 receiver and wiring for 7.1 if the room isn't already finished. To save money, you could start with 5.1 speakers and add the rear surrounds later. Also, you could use the extra amp channels on the receiver to power speakers in another room. Most 5.1 and 6.1 receivers these days are low end models that wont have enough power for your room, IMO.
