CIRCULAR AUDIO: Home theater speakers 3 feet away from listener

I am the only listener in a small 10x15 foot room. Being the only person in the room, seated 6 feet from the tv I thought it might be cool to place a 7.1 system in a 6 foot diameter circle enveloping me. I'm wondering if closer is better with sound. I know it's cool to be close to a 1080p tv, but does the same go for high quality audio like true hd? Keep in mind this is for watching blu rays, not listening to music.

I guess you can try it but it doesn't seem like the ambience will have a chance to really develop- some reflection is assumed and needed for the sound to be realistic. The sound tracks aren't mastered the way you;re thinking of setting your speakers and 6' is awfully close for watching TV.

to recreate the audio mastering done for Dolby Digital 5.1 (or maybe 7.1, but few soundtracks are mastered in 7.1) - try to locate speakers as close to the Dolby Labs recommended setup as you can. Other than the curiousity aspect of the idea, it is a waste of money. In small listening spaces it is better to have a properly set up 5.1 than an improperly set up 7.1 speaker arrangement.
