Chucking the Yammy V663...Now What?

If you have read any of my previous posts, you will know that I have been unhappy with the 663 for the last year. It has been a constant struggle to get it to sound right and the fact that it does not pass btb and wtw has made video calibration a bit of a nightmare. (The very fact the receiver messes with the video signal at all bothers me) Look for it on sale here on E-bay in the next couple days.

Now.. My anal-ness is very much toward music. With player like my own Oppo 980 and the Oppo 83 doing all the DAC and Bass Management, I really don't need a processor. I plan to let my TV do video switching and to get a good preamp.

Now, here comes the chicken and egg problem: If I get a good pre-amp, I am short funds for an amp. If I get an old receiver, say Outlaw 1050/1070 or NAD T7*4/5 then I am back in the receiver boat (I have made up my mind to try to go separates)

Since sound is so important to me, I am thinking get a good pre-amp (I am eying the Audio Refinement Pre-2 DSP) then run my older Yamaha HTR-5760 as an amp (I still think it sounds great...I currently cannot use it as a pre pro since the DSP processor failed.. can only take the 7.1 ins, will not play sound otherwise...this is the second time this has happened. Last time it happened, I got it repaired.. this time I bought the 663...wish I had repaired it again)

So, so I go with the pre-amp and old yammy and get a good amp later or do I get an older receiver now and get a good amp later?

Which receiver is best sonically (I am looking at stuff 3-6 years old)?

Sorry for the dump..thanks for the help!

PS I know receiver makes the most sense, but sound quality is really important to me.

You don't state your budget. You can out together a Quad preamp and power amp for around $1000. That will give you relief from your reliability issues.

I *thought* my budget was going to be about $1000, but my wife has appropriated some of the money for paying bills (of *all* things!) So, I should have about 400-500 left. I think at this point I am going to go for a 3 or 5 channel amp and unfortunately wait on the preamp.

There is an old Adcom GFA-6000 for sale for cheap. It is 100x3 and 60x2. That is kinda perfect for me as my rears are small bookshelves.

Is this a good amp? Since it is so cheap, I am assume it's old.. how reliable are Adcom?

Thanks.
