Chime in on SVS Loudspeakers

Hey all,

I'm finally ready to make another upgrade to my system and I want to hear some opinions on the SVS SBS-01 surround speakers. I have mains already, which I will replace much later on, but I want to buy a center and two rear channels to complete 5.1. However, I want to make sure that I buy speakers that will last a long time, sound great, and I can upgrade my mains with later on. I already have an SVS sub which I love, and I just want to make sure that SVS is the right way to go for loudspeakers as well.

I put a 5.1 set in my parents room but it has a Sunfire sub. The bookshelves sound pretty good for their size, but the sound is just not big enough for me. They don't put out very much bass (never expected them to) but the mids and highs sound quite nice. I much prefer floorstanders for a much fuller sound. If space is limited though they are very good for the price.

They are very good speakers in the price range. Smooth and clear with decent bass.

Speaker upgrade

Why not upgrade your mains and center and move you current speakers to the surround channels? You will have the new speakers in the most important locations and a good tonal match across the front.
You might consider ording a pair of the SVS and Onix X-LS bookshelf speakers and returning the loser.

If you're happy with your mains, you'll likely want to find a matching center from the same speaker manufacturer and if possible, the same line of speakers. If you can provide what you're using for your towers, we may be able to help offer suggestions on this.

As for using SVS as side or side and rear surrounds, these will likely be pretty decent speakers for the money, but don't base your speaker purchasing decision on the fact you're using an SVS sub. While SVS makes exceptional subs for the money and a pretty good bookshelf offering to this point, your speakers don't have to "match" your subwoofer in any way, shape or form.

My suggestion would be that if you're pleased with the sound you're getting from your existing mains, find a matching center, then grab a pair of bookshelf speakers or bipole speakers if your movie watching is more predominant than your five channel music listening... -TD
