Chest Thumping Bass

I want bass that I can feel in my chest when I watch movies. At the same time I am uneducated on what it takes to get this feeling. I have a room that is 5060 cubic ft and it is on the second floor of my home. I really only want to spend about $1000 on this. Would two MFW-15’s be the best choice for this…or will it be overkill? Maybe a solution from Epik? I’m not too worried about looks so maybe even something from eD? I will most likely be pairing them up with Rocket 850s. The SVS Ultra is too rich for my blood so I need to get some bang out of the cheaper options. Let me know what you all think.

Thanks,

Chris

Chest thumping bass is usually from an improperly calibrated sub/speaker AKA: a really big hump in room response. A good sub should make your hair stand on end :)

I would say the MFW-15s would be a very good choice. 5000 square or cubic ft? That could be a HUGE difference, and it matters quite a bit.

Whoops. I fixed it. It is cubic. L x W x H.

Room sorta shaped like a "T". 29' x 16' x 8.5'. Then attached to that to make the T shape with no wall inbetween is 12.5' x 10.5 x 8.5.

So feeling it in my chest would mean that it is set up wrong? I thought that was a good thing during explosions.

Sub design confuses me. How can a 12" sub be on par with two 15" subs?

It is a dual 12" sub but will still lack a bit in output compared to two 15" woofers. Both subs are in the same enclosure (SVS). One can place the two 15" optimally within the room yielding better overall response to boot.

The HSU isn't cutting it for you? Let me know if you want to let it go. I know someone that may be interested in buying it from you.:) Heck, I might even buy it back.:D

I can't believe I totally overlooked the fact that it had dual 12"s. It makes a little more sense now.

LOL! The HSU is definitely cutting it. I am using it in my living room in a 2.1 config. It makes the walls rattle sometimes. I enjoy it...but I haven't "felt" it hit but I wasn't expecting it to. You definitely hooked me up with a good deal Seth. I may consider selling it back to you someday though. ;)

I can use the Ultra as an example - you sort of feel it everywhere, not just your chest, because it has great response. My sub is much the same, though not at the same levels as the Ultra - you feel the air in the room react, but not necessarily concert like chest thumping. Chest thumping bass is often in the 40-80hz range and usually indicates a big peak in that region.

So I should be looking for the best "air" mover then? Or, in the case of having two 15s could I set one up to give you that "hair raising" feeling while purposely setting the other one up to have a peak in the 40 - 80hz so I can still get the chest thump?

I could not have explained it better than j_garcia.

I do have an ULTRA and yes, I frequently look around the room where the reaction is coming from. I can feel the vibration and occasional rattling of furniture. This sub is truly awesome.

I have a PB13-Ultra and its amazing. I think that the OP is looking for "disco" thump, not flat response. The MFW-15's with some sort of EQ, maybe an Berringer would yield the results he's looking for.

The OP doesn't know what he wants. LOL. I'm still ingesting all the posts though. I know Craigsub did a comparison of a lot of the different options out there...the problem is the dang thread is sooooo long now that it is taking me forever to comb through it.

Be aware that MANY MANY MFW-15 owners are having problems with loud hum. Also note that it takes two MFW-15's (hum and all) to equal one SVS PB13-Ultra. Yes the Ultra is more expensive, but its a bad A$$ sub.

Look at this one:

18" driver, 1000 watt amp, $1599.00

Th ultra and the conquest is too rich for my blood. I need to get the most bang out of 1K as possible. If 2 MFW-15's equal the PB13-Ultra than I can get the performance of the Ultra for only 1K instead of 1.5 - 1.6K. I wish I could pull it off though. I would love a quality product from SVS.

Taken from craigsub:

Here is the scoring summary with the Home Theater score and Music score, respectively shown as (HT-M).

Elemental Designs A7-900 ($2200 ID/SI): 116 points (63-53)
Epik Conquest ($1599 ID): 112 points (60-52)
SVS PB13-Ultra ($1499 ID): 109 points (57-52)
Epik Castle ($999 ID): 109 points (59-50)
AV123 MFW-15 Duals: 109 points (56-53) (note, duals were tested as duals are offered as a package)

Now if this blind testing holds water, then two MFW-15's tested as a pair scored 109 points, just like one PB13-Ultra :)

The size of the woofer and its other characteristics are separate issues. For example, some woofer cones are capable of moving a greater distance than others, and this will be relevant to the performance of the speaker. Do NOT buy a subwoofer based upon the size of the woofer; buy it based upon actual performance.

Another thing that many people get confused about is power with a subwoofer. A more powerful amplifier is NOT a sign that the woofer is louder or deeper or better in any way. Assuming that the power ratings are derived in the same method, a speaker with a 100 watt amplifier could play louder than another one with a 1,000 watt amplifier. Or it might not; it will depend upon the efficiency of the woofer in the box. So, do NOT buy a subwoofer based upon the power of the amplifier; buy it based upon actual performance.

Actual performance, of course, involves frequency response, volume output (how loud it plays), and distortion. Typically, manufacturers are not forthcoming with all of the important information, so one tends to look for professional reviews in which actual measurements were taken.
