Our daughter's best friend turned 16 this past weekend and she had asked Nancy (who used to own a bakery) and I if we would make her cake for her big party. We of course said sure and told her she could have anything she wanted and she came up with a 3 layer cake with zebra stripes. Not what I was expecting but figured what the hell, it's her party.

Nance made perfect cakes and fillings. The bottom was a triple layer chocolate cake with cookie dough filling. The middle was double layer French vanilla with an OREO filling and the top was a double layer strawberry with strawberry filling.

I did all the fondant work. Figuring out how to cut out zebra stripes and figuring out how to lay them out was a new experience but it came out pretty damn good. Nancy did all the piping and the ribbon and what not. There where 100 kids and they all went ape sh*t when we carried it in which took her dad and I a solid effort. It went over well and those little bast@ards barely left a crumb by the time the night was over! This was by far the most unconvential cake I've ever made. Usually I'm helping Nancy with buttercream flowers and fondant bows... so this was a change. Pretty cool though in the end... she had a neat idea for something different and it came out pretty cool. Here's some pics:

Wow Chris! Just reading the description of the cake made my mouth water. If you lived closer, I would certainly have you make a few cakes for me. Of course, all would be much easier.........LOL!!!!! :):p:) Awesome job my friend.

Cheers,

Phil

I really don't know the difference between the different Cake shows, I just saw what my woman put on every now and again.... her and her mom make awesome cakes and bakery stuff... cookies are unbelievable (decorated to the hilt) - they get contracted to make cookies for places.

I just build subwoofers... hheheh

Thats incredible. Nice work! The bottom two layers sound unfreakin' real. I'll leave the strawberry to someone else. :D

I'm very much a French Vanilla guy myself, but the strawberry was very mild and was actually better to me than the chocolate.

That cake was ridiculous the more I think about it. I weighed a ton had a total of 9 1" pvc pipes supporting the layers. I learned a lot more about working with fondant which was cool. I never really did any kind of design or decorating with it. I usually just used it to cover the cake like normal. The fondant we used actually tasted pretty damn good as far as fondant goes. I was expecting to see a lot of plates with the fondant left over, but all the kids pretty much ate everything.

I have a recipe for a rolled buttercream which you can use like fondant. I'm going to tackle that next. I did it before, but the recipe needs work so it's time to experiment and make it really shine. I'm not in any hurry though. We just made a 3 cakes and a bunch of triple chocolate mini brownies for a charity bake sale at the office. I"m pretty much caked out.
