Yard sales can really kick a$$. Needed a lot of cleaning inside and out, but basically works well. Apparently from a non smoking environment, because it is in surprisingly good condition. A bit more detailed cleaning will be needed inside, as the mute button gets stuck (button comes out, but mute is still on, had to wiggle it to get it to work). ALL lights work.

Pioneer SX-990 Circa '71-73, 28W @ 8 Ohms (gets a lot louder than you might think).

Cost? $5.00 :D

Cool.

Did you need to out manuever Michael Fremer* for it?

Brian

*Hope thats not too cryptic a reference. He said in a past column that he buys old 70's Receivers at yardsales and gives them to friends kids that are just starting out in hi-fi.

Hehehe, no, but that was the plan for this guy. I'm sure someone I know or someone in the family can put this guy to use. Couldn't pass it up for that price, especially since it looked like it was in good shape. Picked up an old tape deck with it for another $5, but that doesn't seem to work (everything seems functional, but play won't engage).

I sold a bunch of these back when I was in HS, seemed like the first ones had soldering issues, where they forgot to solder a couple of wires, but the later ones were great, except for the weak power levels. I saw one a year or so at Goodwill, for 18.00, I think. I was very tempted, but I already have 2 early 80's Yamaha receivers sitting around, with 3 times the power, so I passed.

Great Price!
