I finally finished my basement and want to bring my Marantz 8001 down there. I need to buy a decent AV receiver that has video up conversion. My Sony Plasma (if you know Sony, it's an older TV but a great one) only show picture with the through component. Nothing else works. I need help picking the best and least expensive receiver that has video up conversion from composite or s-video to component (red, blue, green). Sound is always important to me the getting 480 upconverted 1080 means more. I've been looking at Pioneer and Yamaha.

Hope you can help me

Are you just looking for a receiver that will upconvert from composite video and s-video to component video, or are you also looking for one that will upscale from 480 to 1080? Upconverting is pretty common nowadays and can be had in the $200 range. Upscaling starts out higher - I'm not into that, so I'm not sure where - but I think it starts around the $800 range.

It is upscaling that I'm looking for. I have a Marantz SR8001 which does the job but I'd like to bring that down stairs.

May I please ask for a quick explanation on the difference between upconverting and upscaling?

i made a search for you

Upconversion is conversion from one interconnect to a higher quality one. Composite to Component would be upconversion. Component to HDMI would be upconversion.

Upscaling is increasing the resolution of the signal such as 480 to 720 or 720 to 1080.
basically, upconversion doesn't touch the picture quality but just makes it convenient in terms of running fewer cables.

upscaling improves the picture.
