Change Amp on Sub (makes sense or no)

I have a 400 watt downfiring 12" sub. Would it make any sense to change the amp to 1000 watts. Any major gains or drawbacks on this idea.

The only real drawback I can see would be the potential to really push the driver too hard causing premature mechanical failure. Make sure it can handle the power before hand. I would imagine too much juice would fry the voice coil or cause premature wear of the spider from over excursion or other damage.

In addition to previous post.....

Some amplifiers will have built in high-pass filter to protect the driver from over excursion, I guess this is quite important with ported systems as repeated "bottoming out" will break the driver. It will be important to make sure that the driver is protected, I guess....
