Cerwin Vega/Sony advice needed

Hello - I am in the market for 2 front speakers. These will be used at this time 100% for listening to music (Rock, Electric jazz, Funk) - I like my music loud with a nice full low end (bass.) My receiver is a SONY ES1000 and I currently dont use it for a home theater set up. I dont have room for or desire to buy a subwoofer now - I am considering the Cerwin Vega V15F floor speakers. Are these speakers a good match for my Sony ? Unfortunately I will NOT be able to listen to these speakers before buying - no one sells them in NJ! Does anyone out there own the Cerwin V series floor speakers or listened to them? I have listened to PSB speakers and others that are more $$ and more favorably looked upon by audiophiles, but I am not impressed with the power. They all seem to be unable to give me that kick in the butt sound (w/o a sub of course)
Will these speakers be able to be incorporated later with a theater system, i.e. 5.1 or 6.1 set up? They are in my price range $500/pair. Is there any other manufacturer who makes floor speakers these days that can deliver a fat sound w/o sub? Thanks in advance for your help- Mike

I have an old pair of Cerwin Vega D7's with the good ole horns that were great. Cerwin's are not what they used to be. I would definitely NOT buy that model.

I just recently went to a B&M store to look at the Cerwin Vega V15F's and was VERY surprised to see that the way the grill is built when the woofer hits really hard and extends it actually hits the grill!! You could even see the marks on the surround of the sub. Either way I then listened without the grills just for comparison sake and the CLSC-15's are MUCH better.

They are more like the old school Cerwin's and that's probably why they are called the classic series. They are made well and they are much "louder" then the V series. They are usually a little more money (anywhere between $25 to $50 more) but easily worth it.

I would advise going with a speaker with no greater than a 12 inch diameter woofer.
It's been my experience that a lot of 15 inch woofers tend to distort the bass.
To me they sound tubby.
Cheers :)

when i was in college, everyone had Cerwin Vega 12's -- including myself, and they were great for playing music loud w/ a lot of bass. I sold my speakers a few years after i graduated and I am not sure about CV's quality now, but I know when I looked at them, in the early 90's, the 12's were much better than the 15's. They sounded better than the 15's, put out plenty of bass, and were capible of playing extremely loud. When I bought my Vega's I was all set on getting 15's to one up everyone elses, but came to the conclusion the 12's were a better speaker -- they sounded better and were a little cleaner than the 15's. I actually sold my Vegas and bought some PSB-500's. I still have the PSB's in one room in my house and still enjoy them, but upgraded my main system w/ B&W's. If you just want raw power, Vegas are probably still a good choice, but if you want some great sounding speakers, you should probably look elsewhere.
