Cerwin Vega LW-12 Subwoofer

Hello,

I am new here but I would like some advice on a purchase of a subwoofer. I have been looking for a decent subwoofer for my home theater/stereo that will really crank out the lows. I have an older 10" sub with very little power behind it and that just doesn't cut it... Anyway, I have the option to buy the older Cerwin Vega LW-12 subwoofer in very good condition for about $80. Is it a good buy? I looked up the sub and it seems pretty good based on the specs... Also it has raving reviews on many sites, but the reviews are from mostly 2000-2001 (about 8 years ago), so I'm just wondering if this sub would still be considered "good" by today's standards...

Please let me know what you guys think and if it would be a good buy...

Thanks so much!

Hi Swidez,

I am not familiar with that model, but I know that you can buy some Cerwin Vega subwoofers for only $20. It's not a great brand for a sub. You'll be better off to look at better companies for a used sub, and also perhaps increase your budget a little more. Good places to shop for used audio equipment, speakers, subs, etc., is Audiogon and Videogon. It is very tricky to buy from e-bay, or places like that in general.

For used subs, look for brands like; Atlantic Technology, Axiom Audio, Boston Acoustics, Definitive Technology, Energy, HSU Research, Jamo, JBL, Kef, Klipsch, Monitor Audio, Outlaw Audio, Paradigm, Polk Audio, PSB, RBH Sound, REL, Velodyne, and even Yamaha.

Cerwin Vega is simply not the best sub around. All the other ones, from just above, are better in my opinion, I'm sure of that (100% sure).

Cheers,

Bob

I'd probably buy the LW-12 for $80 assuming it's in as good of condition as you say it is. I would think it would handily outperform that little VE-28 in output and depth. The VE-28 has two 8" woofers and is spec'd do go down to 30hz, not low enough to consider a subwoofer.

The good thing is, if you accidentally blow up the LW-12, no big deal, it was 80 bucks.:D
