Hi guys!

If I can add an amp to a receiver using the pre outs L/R, can I add a further stereo amp to run the centre speaker?

Has anyone done this?

Can a stereo amp run one center speaker?

as always, feel free to tell it how it is!!!!:D

I haven't done it, but there is no reason you can't use one channel of a stereo amp for a center channel.

You could but it I don't really see a point in doing it. You'd be better off with a simple L + R stereo setup from a listening standpoint. If you really want to add a center it would be better to buy something that can process the center channels audio signal separately from the L/R channels.

Maybe you could pickup a mono block or a stereo amp that's bridgeable. That would be better. You could also use the stereo amp to passive bi-amp your center.

Amps do not process a signal.

I think the OP is planning on using a two channel amp for his L/R and a second amp for the center.

i was thinking he's using a 2 ch stereo receiver and purchasing something that does 5.1+ would be a better option.

I guess that hadn't crossed my mind. We'll have to see if maynardo gives us any more info.

He seems to have a Denon 3805. Yes, you can use one of the stereo amp channels or a mono-block if it's not already purchased to power the center.

more info

Thanks for the comments boys.

Yes the denon 3805 is a 7.1 CH Home Theater A/V Surround Receiver:

I´ve added an Emotiva UPA 2 using the pre outs on the denon.

the difference is excellent! the sound is very clear and exciting!?!

Hence the questions:

1) If I add a further 2 ch. amp (which I have sitting on a shelf collecting dust!!) to the denon, using the pre out marked centre, would this bring a bit more life to this speaker,

and

2) how would a stereo amp work one speaker. (it can be bi wired).

many thanks,

M.

I'd say try it out if you have an extra amp sitting around. Most likely it will be an improvement. You have two options. Connect the center pre-out to one of the channels on your extra amp. The other option would be split the center pre-out, run to each amp channel and biwire the center. I'd probably just go with the first option. Also, some amps are bridgeable. If yours is and your speakers are 8 ohm it might be another option. If your center is 4 ohm, that might be pushing the amp capabilities (not entirely sure).
