I know it's recommended to match all your speakers, but I got Rega R3 for the front, and they don't make surround speakers, and I'm not sure their center speaker is as good as value as the R3.

My current center is a Bose that I got 14 years ago for $100, and it stinks. It sounds muddy, and you can't hear dialogue at all. It's sturdy though, so I use it as an outdoor speaker more than anything.

I originally was going to limit it to $200, but for HT, the center speaker supposedly has the most demanding job. So here's some of the ones I'm considering that might match my Rega.

Wharfedale Evolution Centre $500
100W, 89 dB, 16.6” x 11.7” x 6.7”

Axiom VP 160 $400
400W, 95 dB, 6 ohms, 27.5” x 7.5” x 7.5”

Rega RVox Center $375
80W, 90dB,

Wharfedale Diamond 9 CS Center $350
120W, 88 dB, 15.7” x 9.2” x 7.8”

Paradigm CC-270 $279
100W, 90 dB, 22-3/4” x 10-1/4” x 7-1/2”

Axiom VP100 $250

Im not familiar with Rega speakers. If you decide to choose a center channel other than Rega, consider Axiom audio. I can't comment on the VP100 as I have not heard it, but the VP150 is amazing. I have had mine a few weeks and love. Voices are loud and clear.

I don't think matching the mains to the center/surround is as important for me. I only listen to music on 2-channel. I'm not interested in SACD 5.1. I have 4,000 CDs that will sound just fine on the two fronts. For movies, I really can't imagine sitting, watching a movie, with most of the sound coming from the center speaker, that I'd be thinking, damn, if only I got the same brand!

I'm not willing to pay $500 each for center & surrounds, so I've about given up on finding Wharfedale's Evolution for cheaper. I really like the idea of the bipole surrounds though, so I'm leaning towards the Mordaunt-Short Avant 905 center and 903 surrounds, also bipole, only $250.

I got a Sunfire True Super Junior for $500.

spending $500 on a center sux, but i just upgraded from a focal sib to a focal cobalt 800s center, $430 (got a great deal). all i can say is wow, it was alot more money than the original center, but movies are WAY better now. something like 70% of the sound comes from the center during movies, go demo some, your choice. im glad i did, good luck
