So I am helping my friend look for a new center channel because his blew. He will be running my (weak) Kenwood VR-606 receiver. He wants to spend under a $100 what's the best bang for the buck and where should he get it.

Ideally you want your center to match your fronts, for a smooth and even soundstage. We don't know what he is using, so it's hard to make a good recommendation. This could be a good opportunity for him to step up and get a nice center, with the intention of later adding matching right/left channel speakers.

Not for a $100, unless he finds a good used one for that price.
The only other choice would be Harman Audio's ebay store, where he will find auctions for Infinity and JBL centers. He might get lucky and get an auction for around a $100.
But even then, might only get a cheaper 2-way center, instead of a higher priced, and much better 3-way center.

First off you what was the center that he blew. That might get you better responses.

But for under $100 you won't be finding a QUALITY speaker.

Or more specifically, what are the mains being used?

You can use a studio monitor for the center, such as a Behringer or KRK.

I pretty much figured the center and mains would be the same, my bad.
Didn't even think about a studio monitor either, again my bad.

He is running two kenwood book shelf speakers for left and right out of a "surround in a box" system. So he should just pick up a JBL or something, he won't spend much money, I am just trying to help him get the most for it?
