Center Channel Placement?

I am having a TV stand/cabinet custom built for my TV and A/v equipment. I wanted to put the center speaker directly under the TV laying horizontally. Well, the guy that is making the stand suggested that I put the Center Speaker standing vertically, directly under the tv. Will this work? The top of the Speaker would be 28" off the ground and the bottom would be only 8" off the ground. Thanks for any help...

Center channel

Most center channel speakers are not designed to mount vertically. It has to do with the horizontal vs. vertical dispersion pattern of the speaker. You don't want much vertical dispersion from the center (mounted horizontally) otherwise it would bounce off the ceiling and floor.

Also, since, you are building a custom cabinet, make sure it will fit an upgraded Paradigm center channel. It is very important to have a tonal match between the front and center channel. Finally, mounting any speaker in a cabinet, especially a ported design, will effect the performance of the speaker. Leaving the back off of that section of the cabinet might minimize the effect.

Thanks jcpanny.

My Paradigm speakers are no longer made. Do you think the current center speakers Paradigm offers would match up with these. I think these were built in 1994. They are the 7se model, not to be confused with the Monitor 7's.
