Center channel cabinet problem...

I am in the process of shopping for new center channel and I have looked at both Axiom VP100 and Ascend CMT-340c. My problem is with my entertainment center cabinet. There is a top shelf, but the opening is only 4 inches. there is space up above, so I could pull the shelf out and slide the speaker in from behind, but once I pull the center speaker up to the front, the top part of the speaker would face the outer facing of the cabinet. Do you think this obstruction would cause much audio distortion? If so can anyone suggest a quality center channel that has a rather short height?

The radius 180, 225, & 250 are just 4 3/4 inches wide and are designed to lie down on their side as well as stand vertically.

Obviously the best choice for any center channel is to match your fronts - same company, same line. However, getting the center channel you want could then mean that you later upgrade the rest of your speakers to match.

The radius are getting really good reviews. Most of the reviews are from the British press, but being a British speaker, MA doesn't get as much exposure in the US press.

ecoustics.com has some reviews.

Enjoy

I currently have the JBL music 2 and movies 2 set, but will be changing the front 3. I will make sure they all match. The room is rather large, 21' X 17'. do you think that Radius line will fill this space adequately?

Is that the ONLY space you can put it?

Is their room atop your display? Ideally you don't want anything in the way of any speaker. Center channels can go above and belwo the display, but they need to point at the listener.

If you are planning ot upgrade the front 3, I suggest you buy fronts taht will work for every channel.

I guess I could put the center on top of the cabinet and angle it down. I was just worried that that might be too high. That would put it about foot and a half above the TV.

That may be your best option. I searched quite a bit for a stand with a shelf that was tall enough to fit my center speaker. After finding one I did not like the the way the speaker sounded when placed on an enclosed shelf. I wound up using a TV wall mount to put the speaker above the display.

Center Channel position.

Any type of enclosure around your center channel speaker (including above, behind, and sides) is going to effect the sound of the speaker. This is especially true for ported speakers. On top of the cabinet is probably your best bet. You might consider auditioning (ordering) the mains from Axiom and Ascend so that you can decide on which line of speakers to go with.
