The "game room" I'm in the middle of creating will have a lot of solid surfaces except of the carpeting. I'm thinking that maybe some sort of sound treatment is needed for the ceiling since the Mrs. is not crazy about any treatments to the walls. Are there any reasonably priced DIY products out there?

Ah, the Mrs.

We've got to get creative and find away for the gals in our lives to appreciate acoustic treatments for walls and corners!

...oops, sorry.

Yes! If you can find some Owens Corning 703/ 705 in your area and attach it to your ceiling, then cover it with fabric, it will be a start. However, you really need to treat those corners first if you plan on decent bass response in that room. (I assume you'll have some type of media system in there, right?)
If you cannot find OC products in your area, you may want to check with another gentleman on this board who goes by "bpape". Bryan is a great guy who can set you up with OC 703 and other sound absorptions mediums. If you can get bass traps into your corners however, you should. And ther are MANY solutions out there that look great and that will offer super acoustic enhancement.

Good luck!

Joel...thnx for the info...will need to find pics online to convinve her of any approach. I was thinking of some sort of textured ceiling rather than just a painted flat drywall(it's already up) and thought maybe there was a textured finish that would also help the sound. The actual source of the music will be in another part of the house that will be wired to an IR extender system similar(or may even be) a Niles set up that I have come across online. The game room will probably only have 2 floor standing speakers in corners apprx. 14 ft apart and facing the bar/pool table.

It would be great if there was some kind of textured finish that would help with sound, but the sad true is there is not..:(
I recommend buying many roses for the wife and taking here to a really nice night on the town. After many drinks and you being a fine gent then that would be the time to start to talk about bass traps..:D
All kidding aside the only way to really get your room under control is bass traps in corners...

Or you can spend some money and hire someone artsy to airbrush something on the cloth on the front of the treatments so they're 'art' instead.
