After relaxing, and watching a movie the other day I thought, wouldn't it be interesting to watch a movie not only in 5.1, but also have speakers facing directly above you on the ceiling. You would be completely immersed in sound from every angle. For example, imagine a helicopter flying above a character in a movie. You would first hear it from the S- rears, then a mix of S –sides, and S – ceiling speakers, and finally the front, and center speaker. I’m sure the concept or idea has been thought up, and experimented before, but I wanted to hear this forums thoughts.

Thanks

Surround locations

Intersting idea.
From my experience, in-celing speakers as the ONLY speakers for the side and rear surrounds are non-ideal for a couple reasons. First, the shape of your ear makes it difficult to hear the sound gernerated from above vs. the sides, and second, the studio mix and delays are based on the side and rear locations.

If you add a second set of speakers to the side surrounds on the ceiling, you might find it difficult to set the speaker levels and delays properly causing you to make the surround sound less convincing instead of better.

I believe it's called an envelop channel. Never heard it myself, a salesman at a local electronics shop mentioned it to me. He specifically mentioned Casper and The Matrix have encoded been encoded with this info, though I am not entirely sure what type of processor you would need to access.

Yes, interesting idea but how many speakers would be enough? How about one in-between the ceiling and closer to the front and back? How about some speakers low ? In Tomlinson Holman's 10.2 has a good many. Is that enough? Maybe one at every 10deg arc?
Just curious:D

If you want to be "fully enveloped" in sound, just get a good pair of headphones. :)

Well, yes, my head would be all set, but my body would miss out on all that cool LFE:D

Just add the Buttkicker LFE to the headphones and you are all set.
