Hey all, looking for suggestions for ceiling speakers to be used for surrond in a small room. Anyone have any ideas?

Do you have an option for wall mounting surround speakers? Ceiling ones are not very good as far as spacial effects in the rear. Good for background music.:D

What happened to your thoughts of using the Atlantic Tech 2200 system? It has good bi/di-pole wall mounted surrounds. The di-pole setup should work well in your small room.

I love the Atlantic Tech speakers. I have them in my living room. I'm afraid though that I don't have enough space. The back wall is about 124 inches and the sofa is about 120 inches wide, that's why I'm now thinking about ceiling or wall speakers up high kind of out of the way.

The room is in the basement. The viewing area is about 10X12...not that big. I just got the Sony 50 inch sxrd. I plan on buying the Denon 2307ci when released along with the Denon 1907 dvd player.

.....Spenser, there's nothing wrong with a 10 X 12 room unless all surfaces are concrete, of which you'll BRIGHT in your pants....even then, classy looking rugs on the wall would tame that....I don't know, I've thought about this one a bunch....and, after trying to visualize your room with the couch against the back wall, I would go with wall-mounted surrounds in the back corners aimed about a third of the way down the opposite wall from the rear wall, just high enough to not crack a head while sitting on the couch....just like any other system setup with surrounds, you'll have a sweet spot in the middle of the couch unless you set the system to be left or right of the middle of the couch....you said you "love" the Atlantic Tech 2200SR's which AVRat just said could be wall-mounted for surrounds....you might consider moving the whole system from the living room to your dedicated home theater room....unless of course your wife says over her dead body....one more suggestion....move that couch at least a foot forward away from the back wall for the surrounds to be a bit behind you....now it's your call on all this worthless drivel/gruel I've spewed....good luck, and congratulations on a dedicated home theater room....sure beats a living room with openings to kitchens and hallways and such....as far as room issues being tamed, you're probably better off with 10 X 12 over a larger room......

Thanks for advise AVRat and mulester7. I'm trying to make this a perfect room for a movie and you have helped me out a lot. I like the idea of moving my current speaker system, and if anything just trying it out before I buy the new product. I don't think Mrs. Spenser will mind if I move the speakers and stands she thinks looks like Easter Island monuments. The Axiom Audio speakers look like a pretty good deal for front and center... I'll probably go for them once things get settled. I'll keep reading on.

I have the Paradigm CS-80R in ceiling speakers for my rears. I have them placed about 24 " beyond the outer sides of the main listening area. When a movie is deep in the throws of some really good surround sound, I can't tell that the speakers are in the ceiling as the whole room is filled with sound coming from all directions. I do think though, that if the speakers were in the wall directly over and behind the couch, I'd be able to tell the directionality of the sound, whereas I can't now with the speakers in the ceiling. I know that in ceiling speakers aren't ideal, but for my room with the couch placed up against the back wall, and no side walls to place surrounds (left wall is all windows and right is open to the kitchen), I didn't see many other options.

Hey Cavediver, the more I think about it the more I'm leaning toward wall mounted speakers mounted about 5 feet up. Since the room is so small, I'd like to keep it clean looking... but rocking. Anyone have any ideas for great sounding in-wall speakers.

Are you thinking in-walls all around or just the surrounds? Bi/di-poles would be preferred but are rather expensive and less prevalent than direct radiators. Do you have a budget in mind per pair? Polk, Paradigm, Def Tech, Atlantic Tech, Infinity, JBL, Monitor Audio, RBH offer good options.

I'm thinking in-wall for the surronds just to keep the look clean, but with really good sound. The front and center I've decided to go with what the Audioholic $5000 system recommends (sub too). I'd like to keep the surronds at $500 or less. I'll try to take pic of the room and post it.

I am trying to find a rear/surrond solution to provide a good soundstage for multiple listening positions (normal type sitting room with 2 couches and chair in U shape pointed toward tv). For the WAF I think I need to go with in-ceiling since I do not have a wall on one side of the U and a window on the other. From everything I have read I am going to do in-ceiling w/ positional tweeter for the rears, but it seems most people recommend dipoles for the side surrounds. Is there such a thing as an in-ceiling dipole that sounds good? or would another set of monopole with positional tweeter be fine?

There is an A/V store near where I work that is listed as being a dealer for Def Tech. I'll check them out on Tuesday. I set up the Dvd player yesterday and hooked it to the Tv and watched some 90's Batman cartoons with the kids (none of us could wait for the set up to be complete). Even without the HDMI cable hooked up things looked great going component. It makes you wonder.
