ceiling speaker weight

I have new polk in-ceiling speakers, 8" with dog mounts. What is the maximum speaker weight that a 1/2" ceiling drywall can hold with these mounts?

I think it is a pretty good assumption that your polk speakers are designed to be mounted to drywall with the dog ears. The only other way of mounting inceiling speaker is with the pre-constuction brackets which are installed before drywall on new construction.

In-ceiling speakers are not usually too heavy because they don't have a cabinet like bookshelf speakers.

Drywall typically can hold about 8 pounds. The Polk RC60i only weigh two pounds and I think the 8" version might weigh 3 pounds. Either way they are likely fine to be installed directly in the drywall.
