Hello all,
I have always appreciated the great advice on this forum and now that I'm looking for a new home theater set up, I could use folks help again!
My family recently moved to a house and the wiring is not as good as our old place. So I am trying to figure out if I can adapt what I have, or if I need to invest bigger to get something to work. My set up had been Paradigm 5 fronts, with matching center and rears. Rears were on stands at floor level. I have a Denon 2805 although likely moving to the 2112 in coming months when I also get TV/DVD.
New place has in ceiling rears and a much tougher situation to try to re-wire to allow usage of my current rears. And with a one year old toddler, having speaker stands and even my Paradigm fronts might not be the best idea. So as much as I know that ceiling speakers aren't as great, it would be good to try to make it work. The house is 10 years old and they are likely a low-end speaker the builder put in - while the place is wired for surround, it does not look like a custom set up. The added problem is that when I use the in ceiling speakers and play a good DVD, you really don't hear the rear speakers at all - it basically sounds like stereo instead of surround. I've recalibrated the Denon speaker set up several times, and the test pattern definitely hits the ceiling speakers so they "work", and the receiver setting are correct, just not discernable surround for movies or TV. Someone told me about some insulated boxes that can go in ceiling and essentially direct sound downward instead of banging around the rafters. Thoughts on if that will make enough of a difference? Or new ceiling speakers? Or just go broke and re-do the 5 channel? If I re-do the speakers, I would probably move to wall mount to deal with the kid issue and aesthetics (yes, it'd my husband citing the aesthetics issue, not me!). Lastly, I just bought a Martin Logan Dynamo 500 sub but haven't yet installed it.
Main listening / viewing room is a large family room which is open to the kitchen.
I'd rather throw more of the new money to the TV/Receiver but I at least need to get adequate surround.
Advice much appreciated!
