Ceiling is wired for sound... Any suggestions?

Our living room has pre-wired speaker hookups on the ceiling. There are 3 in the front, 2 in the rear, and a subwoofer hookup (I assume) the back left. I am assuming that ceiling-mounted speakers aren't ideal for a home theater -- you'd rather have the sound coming from in front of you.

What would you suggest I do? Purchase some speakers for the front, and then 5 additional speakers for the ceiling? Open to all suggestions!

If it an HT experience you want, then yes you need three front speakers. You could use the ceiling speakers for the surround, but I'm not sure they are in the right place. If it is 5.1 you want it is best not to use ceiling speakers at all.

What sort of cable was put in for the sub? Generally house installers put on the wrong cable and its useless for a sub.

Find out if it's speaker wire or coaxial.

Depends on what kind of experience you want. If you're looking for the best experience you'll want to abandon the ceiling speakers unless they're close to locations that would support atmos. In room speakers will give you better performance and flexibility options. I hate that builders wire a room for surround, or make a spot above the fireplace for a tv just to check off boxes. Some particulars will help us help you, like room size, layout, budget, performance expectations, etc.
