A statement was issued by the CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro and NAB President and CEO David K. Rehr regarding the California Energy Commission's mandatory regulation for digital television (DTV) adapters. The argument/statement centers around the fact that apparently California is designing energy regulations on a product that does not yet exist (ie. they have no idea what they are talking about.) In the ensuing confusion and potential delays they could simultaneously lose millions of dollars of energy per year that would naturally be conserved once broadcasters no longer have to transmit both analogue and digital signals. That pesky "law of unintended consequences" rears its ugly head yet again...

Yet another example of the inefficiencies of governmental process. Maybe they should instead be more concerned with the waste of energy that occurs within bureaucracy.

CA energy laws

My understanding is that CA has proposed or passed legislation that will apply to all electronic devices, not just the HD converters. One of the requirements relates to the maximum standby power consumption.
Maybe I am oversimplifying the problem, but if the HD converters are still in the design phase, then it should be easy to add the power requirment as a design criteria.
