CD recorder trouble with Sony receiver, questions on how to set up

I have a Sony DA3300ES receiver, Sony CD recorder, cassette deck, DVD recorder, and VCR.
This is the back of my receiver http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Photos/Default.aspx?i=1583300ESB&g=10420
I was recently trying to record audio from a video game onto a CD and had trouble doing this through my receiver. I tried hooking the CD recorder up through the Tape Out with Analog and Optical, but didn't receive any audio on my CD recorder. I plugged the game straight into the CD recorder and was able to record fine. What audio outs on my receiver will work with my recorders? If I have the CD recorder hooked up to the receiver with Optical, do I have to have Optical out to the CD recorder? Will the receiver not output any signal when there is another component selected (such as the game)? Is there any settings I need to change on my receiver so that it outputs audio? If I have something hooked up to the Tape optical in and out can I have something hooked up to the Tape analog in and out? Will I need splitters to hook up all of my equipment? Thanks.

Hey, Dustin. I checked out the owner's manual for the receiver. I didn't look into everything that you asked, but it contains some useful information. How to record starts on page 100, and the notes at the bottom of page 101 answer some of your questions. I'd copy and paste them here, but the document that I downloaded was secured.

Thanks for the reply. It does say that if I have optical in I have to have optical out and if I have analog in I have to have analog out. I guess I will have to play around with it more and try to figure it out. It is just a big trouble moving the cables around and gets painful. Does anyone have any advice on how to set it up?

Ok, I figured it out. It seems that my receiver only outputs analog when analog is going into it. It also won't output analog or optical when optical is going in. It is going to be a pain changing the wires around every time I want to record something. Are all receivers like this?
