CD-R can damage laser

Someone told me yesterday that recorded CD-R's can damage the laser on dvd players. Any truth to this?

I've just had the laser on my Denon 2200 replaced after one year of use, playing mostly burned cd-r's, and i'm wondering if this is a coincidence?

I don't see how there could be any truth to that statement.

CDs and DVDs have different pit lengths and densities and require a different wavelength laser to read them. You need a 680 nm laser to read CD and 750 nm (or thereabouts - have to look it up) to read a DVD. Other than the wavelength required and the format of the data on the disc, they are read in the same manner.

I don't see how playing CDRs can damage your CD player either.

The discs are not read via direct physical contact. They are read via optical reflections from those pits embedded within the disc.

I second both of the above inputs You may want to ask your source, next time you are in contact and ask how will it damage the laser and what is his reference for that? Speculations don't count.
