So I'm setting up somewhat of a "reference" stereo pair in a spare bedroom seperate from my H/T system, and I need a GOOD cd source, the Marantz CD-63 has been mentioned but seems to be hard to find (only one on ebay in the past few weeks) any others I should look into... I'm looking for something a notch above the run of the mill stuff, and I will be using the analog outputs of the cd player so the D/A convertor quality is an issue.... BUT don't want to spend a fourtune on this "secondary" system either.... HELP !

Since you are not willing to spend a fortune (I assume sub $400 or thereabouts?!?) you are not going to experience a big difference among players. I would look for a used multibit player which includes the Marantz CD63 (and other Marantz players from the same era) and some of the Rotel players (855, 955, 975 come to mind). Perhaps the most important thing will be the interface and remote. I had an AMC player which I hated since it had a crappy UI and remote, but it sounded as good as any of the less costly players.

Only by going to a tube based player will you really experience a truly 'different' sound. Used Ah!99's show up for $300 or so on occasion.

You're better off purchasing this kind of gear from Audiogon (www.audiogon.com) which caters to the high-end audio community. Taking usual safety measures for online purchasing still applies of course, but your chances of ending up with a box of rocks if probably lower.

Peruse http://www.audiogon.com ... 2 of the best "affordable" CD players available are the Music Hall CD-25 and Jolida JD-100 (tube). Both can be modified to become reference class players.
