my cd player bit the dust that I have connected to my basement receiver, now I am looking around for a simple single cd player. I noticed they are priced 2-3 times the price of a DVD player that plays cd's and a few other formats for $39 what is the difference of a true cd player vs a DVD player that plays CD'd and more for 1/3rd the price

Some guesses.

1) CD players might offer better programmability ans perhaps shuffle play. DVD players might not offer these features.

2) DVD players depend on having a TV connected to them to navigate any but the most basic features. CD players might not depend on a visual interface to get the most out of them.

There may be more but offhand I can't think of any. Others may chime in, though.

FWIW, I use one of these for both an upconverting DVD player and a basic CD/SACD player, although I don't really get too fancy with my audio demands. I just put in a disc and hit "play"

My personal experience with DVD players, I've interfaced without countless ones in my line of work, is that they have the same overall function of a CD player which usually includes things like repeat, shuffle play, and program (program is almost always only something you can do with a television). DVD players are usually at a disadvantage when it comes to speed. CD players are designed to handle one function which is to play the CDs so it handles that without being bogged down with other procedures that a DVD inherently has.

I happen to have an Adcom 5 disc CD changer for sale here on AH for $65 shipped CONUS.

These guys have mentioned good points. I'll add my two cents. I think that DVD players cost less these days because of economies of scale. In other words, I think that manufacturers are making a lot more DVD players than CD players and can therefore sell them for less while still making a profit.

DVD players are cheaper because manufacturers are making profits by selling DVD's
millions of DVD's are sold every month, but only few thousands of CD's are sold everymonth
thanks to MP3 generation that give us more flexibility

Dont forget some of these inexpensive DVD players dont have all of the outputs (coax or optical) to choose from.. also in a better CD player it may have a better transport and a better DAC in it.
