Car audio recommendations?

I've got an unfortunate friend who has no idea what good is and he might fall to the BOSE hype; just basic recommendations'll do since the guy's in college and on a budget.

Well since he's on a budget, I'd most likely go with an Alpine head unit & alpine speaker all around. Out of curiosity, what is his budget?
