Car Audio question: Shallow mount subs

Are these subs in general any good? I'm really limited in what I am able to fit in my new truck (about 4 1/4" top mounting depth) so it's either a shallow mount sub or something like a Bazooka.

I recently installed a Kicker shallow mount sub in my Silverado and it sounds great. It is plenty loud and I am not really putting a lot of power to it. I think going with a Bazooka would be more of a compromise than a good shallow mount sub.

That's good to hear. The top of my list right now is: Rockford Fosgate P3D210

I have a MTX Thunder 5601 mono amp left over from my last truck I'll be powering it with.

yes they work great too imo,I install them all the time,we use pioneer and rockfords quite a bit,and both of those lines seem to work very well.

My friend has the Kenwood shallow mount subs in his truck, and they sound pretty good.

I am currently using the Rockford P3SD210 in my regular cab Ranger. It's a very small space behind the seat. In general, I'm happy with it. I don't have to run the settings very hot to get it to blend well with the door speakers. (objectively, not tested). I have the two 4 ohm voice coil model and I run it in 8 ohm configuration to get the sound quality that I'm looking for. I don't listen to boom-boom-boom type bass. My driving music is more bands like Rush and Boston so I want a sub with fairly musical bass qualities.

I originally had a Kicker installed and hated it...passionately. It would boom-boom-boom all you'd ever want but it couldn't reproduce a clean musical bass line. IMHO;)

so, your saying that your driver works more like a woofer, and not a subwoofer ?
that is what i like in a car/truck. actually i would like a box like you have, but be a 3 way speaker. and have 2 of em. just sayin.

this is what i used to have in my 97 s-10. middle amp 100wpc to the 6x9's in the doors.
end amps 300wpc each to the 12" 3ways (not subs. woofers)
this system ROCKED !!!
i listen to rock also.

not tryin to jack this thread :)

Just like in the home, I want the sub to blend seamlessly with the mains but in the truck, I'm not listening to anything with a dedicated LFE track. My goal is a nice, smooth and musical response. Given the limited amount of space in a Ranger regular cab, the shallow Rockford sub seems to do a fine job of that. It will provide plenty of SPL and bass thump if I run it in 4 or 2 ohm configuration but it seems to lose it's musical smoothness when I do that.
