Hi,

I am thining about buying Canton LE speakers (190, 110 etc.) for surround.
The reasons: they looks like something I need my price range and silver (requirement from wife).

Questions:

1. Do you know what else I can consider in the same price and quality range that would go in silver finish?

2. Where I can actually listen to them in Tampa area. I am new here, and cannot find any store that would have something like that.

3. What do you think of them?

4. Do I need subwoofer with them? If I do, what I should get?

Thanks.

Hey Max

Cantons are pretty sweet speakers, but not many places that I know of have them in the states. I got a system over here in Germany and put many posts on here trying to get some info before I put down the money; not many people had really had the chance to listen to them. I got the Ergos myself and have been really pleased with them so far (had them for about six months). I haven't heard the LE series much, but one thing you should keep in mind is that these speakers have a very transparent low end. Speakers designed over here generally do not have quite as much emphasis on crazy bass so they do not have TONS of extension, so you might want to budget a sub to go with your purchase. Having said that though, I have just spent the last two weeks demo'ing several differnt subs (from B&W, Velodyne, Quadral and Rel) and have basically come to the conclusion that my speakers work best by themselves for music. So I guess it all depends on what you plan on using your system for the most. Are you more of a music guy, or do your tastes lean more towards HT?

Thanks for reply.

For this kind of speakers I didn't even think about sub for music. Only for HT. And my choice for speakers is defined by music requirements, although I am going to use them as HT. Just the quality here is not so important for me.

But for my music tastes "transparent" bass sounds more attractive than "emphasis on crazy bass" :) So, your comments are reassuring.

I have the Canton LE170's and LOVE them. They dont have crazy bass but they do have enuff for music. Ive recently auditioned the 190's next to the 170's and the 190's are a lot warmer and have a lot more bass. Id say go with the 190's after hearing them I want to buy them badly. Id say get the speakers and listen to them without a sub. I think if youre mainly using them for music youll be more than happy and for HT you may be suprised at the bass output. I dont have a sub currently and am happy with the bass but I do want to buy a sub. Hope this helps.

Look out!

Don't let what I said about a sub scare you. It is entirely possible that you will not want one at all, but a lot of the music coming out these days has some extreme low frequency content in it, and the 170s, or 190s for that matter probably wont be able to reproduce it. The mains that I bought have two nine inch woofers per cabinet and I still like to run a sub for some of the music that I listen to. Having said that though, I do feel that the addition of a sub makes some acousticly recorded music sound a bit muddy. It all really comes down to what sort of music you normally listen to.
