Has anyone heard these Cantons? Accessories for less has a few pair of them and the price is looking good as this model is discontinued. Here is the ebay auction clickme I have googled them and can't get any info in english......The Canton site has links to reviews........two in German and one in Polish....

I have been looking to upgrade my Mordaunt Shorts....they are nice speakers, but I would like to go to the next level....not that price is the only indicator, but the Mordaunt fronts I have were pr'bly retailed at $1200 and the Canton's retailed for $5000. I really, really like side firing woofers. My Mordaunts are powered and the Carats aren't. I don't think the plate amps in the MS' are that good or powerful.........I could use my Acurus amps to power the low end of the Canton's and really get some bass........right now my biamping with an Acurus A250 on each front speaker is really a waste as the side firing subs are powered by plate amps.......so the A250s are really only amping the two six inch mid bass' and the one inch tweeter........
I think the Carats would be a step up up up but I don't think I can audition them...........I don't think I have heard or read a bad thing about Canton...

Any input would be appreciated, applauded and well received.
Thanks in advance, David TwoTrees

Hi, I'm really probably not going to be all that helpful, but about a month ago when I thought I might be able to upgrade my speakers I started looking and Canton was one of the top ones I wanted to audition. Their website www.cantonusa.com has their address and phone- 612-706-9250, their main US office is in Minneapolis. You could try calling them to see if they can give you local dealers information. I actually found a Canton dealer by contacting an RBH dealer who ended up to be looking for another line to pick up. The local Canton rep had asked him about picking up Canton, so when I told him I was interested in them he took the chance to get a couple of their bookshelves to audition. The dealer also told me of another local dealer who had several more styles in store to audition as well. I ended up auditioning their newer or current lines, mostly just bookshelves, Vento, GLE, Karat, and an Ergo tower. I have a more detailed description of the Vento and GLE at avsforum (if you want I can try to copy and paste the lengthy review here, we listened to several bookshelves that night).

The Vento is their top line, and the local rep told us he thought that bookshelf was their best speaker. We were actually pretty impressed with it, the imaging was really good as well as the range for a bookshelf. The GLE is their bottom line and pretty new yet, and it sounded pretty good compared to more expensive bookshelves (GLE is around $500ish, listened to some $800-1600ish), but it did have a different sounds that took a little getting used to. However, both sets of speakers were brand new out of the box, and Canton is a manufacturer who recommends a break in period.

I heard their current lower level bookshelf speaker (they have I believe a 3 way bookshelf, I listened to the 2 way) for the Karat line, and it sounded good as well, nice range. I listened to this in a store (the GLE and Vento were in a home theater of the dealer), so I didn't get a good chance to do real critical listening. I also listened to an Ergo tower which also sounded pretty good, didn't seem to have imaging that the Vento did, but didn't seem bad for a tower at all and probably better than what I have.

From what I've heard, if I get to a point where I can really upgrade, I will go back and listen to these all again as I did like them. Of course, you're looking at a previous generation speaker so I have no idea what differences there might be from what I listened to. Good luck if you try to find a local dealer. I'm sure there has to be some near you.

Thanks for taking some time, amarass. I did find a couple of places here that carry Cantons. None of them carry the Karat line though. I did finally find some English reviews on these speakers and there was nothing, nothing but good things.......the drivers are all in house and of excellent build quality, and the cabinets are really, really sturdy. Each speaker weighs 42kg!

Some links. Karat

Good luck, if you end up getting Cantons make sure to post your opinions here, I'll be interested in hearing them. Mordaunt Short is actually another brand I wanted to audition, so if you think the Cantons are a good upgrade from yours, then I'll just skip the Mordaunts and go straight to Cantons.
I really liked the Vento line, but I do not think I would have room for the center channel, so I might end up going with the slimmer Karat line if I get the opportunity.

I just took the Mordaunts out of the rig this morning and set them up at their new home for an old friend. I loved the 500 series speakers from Mordaunt. But I think they were pretty solid mid fi gear and the karats that I am looking at are certainly a step or two up the food chain. I am negotiating for the Canton's as we speak. Damn holiday weekend interfering with my audio fix:mad:
