Hello, I live here in Germany and have run accross what seems to be a fabulous deal on purchasing some new Canton speakers and was wondering what, if any, input I can get on them. The kit that I am looking at includes a pair of Ergo 1002s (mains), a pair of Ergo 702s (rears) and a single Ergo CM 502 (center). The kit itself is selling for a ridiculously low price, approximately 1800 USD with the current exchange rate, and are all brand new. Does anyone here have any experience with these speakers, or Cantons in general? I have been listening to as many different systems as I can find over here and these just seem to stand out; sound great and did I mention the price?? Anyhow, thanks for any input you can provide...

Hi bupton,

In my quest in setting up a HT, I have listened to the Canton Karat series, S8 and M80 and Vento to be more precise. I compared them to other speakers such as Quadral Ascent 860, Kef Q4/Q5, Dali 2.8....
Th everdict : the Canton Karat series sound rather metallish, the Vento performed better with a more open sound and more bass. From all those I have listened to, I preferred the Dali 2.8 with Quadral Ascent 860 as second. Of course, it remains very much a quesion of going out there and listening yourself . I listened to every speaker both with Denon and Yamaha receivers. May be you could go and have a look in one of the german forums with dedicated Canton threads.

Regards,

Ghislain

Thanks!

Hey, thanks for the input. I actually had thought about going to one some of the local sites, but I have to admit that my ability to read auf Deutsch ist scheisse!! ;) So, what sound qualities made you prefer the Quadrals and the Dalis better? I have listened to a few sets of Quadrals, along with Magnat, Jamo and Elac for that matter, but have not had the chance to demo any Dalis.

I have Canton Ergo 120, truly accurate and fantastic speakers with no exaggeration of any frequencies, balanced and truly well made speakers, proof of good German workmanship.

Yea, I am really impressed with what I have heard of the Ergos so far. The 1002s midrange is just about amazing! Really airy and spacious sounding, it does wonders to female vocals! And did I mention the price that I found this array at? Just the low cost alone makes me want to get rid of my Klipsch Reference gear... ;)

The Ergos match the accuracy of Yamaha's high end speakers like the NS-1000x, NS-200/300 and NS-8HX, the all have accurate sound, specially vocals and excel of difficult female vocals, specially the barritones, plus sax sounds the most natural on them.

Got them!

Ok, I know it has been a while since I first put my question out there, and that not many people replied to it, but I just wanted to post an update. I got the Ergos a week ago and WOW!!! They are absolutely amazing in my listening room! The low end is so clean it is amazing! The Klipsch Reference set up that these replace was a bit faster in response, and a LOT more efficient, but these just sound so much more natural. I know that many people use the term "laid back" to describe several European speaker systems, and this can easily be said about these Cantons but it is a marked improvement over the in your face sound that I had from my Klipsch. And to think, I loved those speakers for a very long time. Oh well, I guess tastes, and ears, change in time. Any way, if anyone out there is ever considering a set of these speakers, and has the chance to audition them, I would definently advise you do it! Especially if you have the chance to get them over here in Germany, where they cost a quarter the price as they do in the states.
