Can't play UK format DVD

I purchased "Miss Potter" on DVD from Amazon.com.uk the day the film was released in the UK to show to my 4 year old girl. It won't be released here in the US until June. Unfortunately, my DVD player indicates that I cannot watch it because it's not allowed in this region. The case indicates that the "region code" is "PAL 2".

Is there any reasonably simple way for me to watch the DVD in the US?

Most DVD players will let you change the region up to four times before it is locked so find the manual for the player and change it to region 2. However, your player may not play PAL format (the US format is NTSC) and that would be an issue you cannot get around.

Although they violate the 'rules' of the DVD forum, there are players available that are region free (play any region) and the enthusiast community creates firmware hacks to make various players region free.

Seriously, I have no life.

Will applying one of those hacks also give the ability to play that PAL format?

Shouldn't be a problem, I haven't come across anyone that has a player that can't play both PAL/NTSC, its normally a TV compatibility issue and setting the player correctly.

In most cases if you have a multiformat TV just set the players 'TV type' setting to 'multiformat'. If your TV is NTSC only then set it accordingly in the player(and the player will convert PAL to NTSC)

cheers:)

Thank you, MACCA350

Thank you, MACCA350.

I visited the website that you recommended. Impressive. Thank you. Unfortunately, I don't know how to follow the instructions that were listed on the site for a Panasonic S55, which I assume is appropriate for my Panasonic DVD-S55 player. All I have is the player and standard remote that came with the player. I do not have a PocketPC or a Palm with Omniremote.

Here is what was written on the hackers' website that you suggested for the Panasonic S55 (I assume that's the same as the DVD-S55):

"Panasonic generic regional code IR sequence

0082 0015 0089 0004 00F2 0033 0017 0010 0091 0013

You can enter these codes with a PocketPC using TV Remote Controller and making a CCF file with these codes. Or use a Palm with Omniremote. Make sure no disc in the player when entering this code."

Most players can be fixed by using just the remote and pressing different buttons in a certain sequence. Your player uses this sequence:

Enter, 6, >=10, <<, 00F2, Audio, 8, 1, Subtitle, 4

Notice the bold code, 00F2, this code is not a standard button on the remote and needs a modified remote or another device to complete the sequence.

More info here and here

cheers:)
