Can't get sound from TV to 4311ci

Hi.

I've got my Samsung TV (UE55C8000) connected to my Denon 4311ci through optical. I've set the sound output from TV to optical using PCM and choose the TV D-OPT input on my Denon (also chosing PCM), but no sound came from the receiver... Cable is fine so I'm kind of lost here. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Make sure Input Assignment is set accordingly. Opt 1 seems to be the default for the TV source. I'm assuming you meant you set the Decode Mode (pg. 84) for the TV source to PCM? What happens if it's set to Auto?

As far as I know, the digital out from TVs I've seen will only pass sound generated from over-the-air stations received by it's internal ATSC tuner. It won't pass through digital signals from any other sources fed to the TV.

But, things could have changed.

If you are, in fact, referring only to generated sound from the TV internal tuner, then please ignore my post.

I doubt things have changed as passing a digital signal derived from HDMI to a non HDCP compliant output is no longer allowed.

Hi.

If I set it to AUTO in the receiver I still get no sound.

Mark, TLS, you might have identified the problem.

I was trying to send the sound from the USB input on the TV (I see a couple of movies once in a while connecting an external HDD to the ports) to the receiver, and this might be the problem...

In that case you'll only get sound from the TV speakers.

There may yet be some hope.

Some TV's, not all, offer red/white analog outputs so you can feed stereo to an amp/receiver. These used to be common but I hear they are being phased out. You might want to check your TV or owners manual for more on this.
