Can't get my remote to work on my 42LG30

All of a sudden my remote isn't working. I tried replacing the batteries, but that did nothing. I tried going and buying a Logitech universal remote, then set that up according to instructions--it would turn everything else on except for the tv. I tried unplugging the tv, leaving it unplugged for a minute, then plugging it back in. Nope. The tv works by hand, but not by remote. Any ideas on how to solve this issue without taking it to the repair shop?

That sounds like a bad IR receiver inside your LG TV.

This is exactly why I warn people away from LG products. They can look good, but I've seen an unacceptably high number of stupid and sometimes fatal issues with way to many of their electronics.

Well, I don't think it's that, because I just figured it out. I did a Google search and found one guy who said, "Unplug the tv, then plug something into the 'REMOTE CONTROL" jack on the back of the reciever. It could be anything--headphones or anything else that will fit the jack. Plug the receiver back in, then remove whatever you have plugged into the jack. It should work." It did. I'd sure like to know why that worked though.

Because LG engineering is second to none.

They maybe 20th or 30th to everyone, but 2nd? In their dreams.

Well, I'm stuck with it. Anyway, Consumer's Reports liked them at the time I bought this one. Which brand do you prefer?

I've just been less than thrilled with LG engineering. They tend to look decent, and their price is extremely reasonable.

But, if I wanted to save cash, I would go to Vizio.

What do I like more?

Samsung, Pioneer, Panasonic, Sharp, Sony, Vizio, NEC, Mitsubishi, Toshiba...

Kind of an extensive list of manufacturers I prefer over LG.

The cheapest Chinese import no-name brands I don't like. Philips I think is worse than LG by a bit. Never understood how the maker of the Pronto series of remotes can STILL not have discretes on their products (Philips)!

But, LG just tries to pack to much stuff into their displays then just fails to actually make a nice reliable display. I think Samsung and Panasonic are both phenomenal with this for LCD and plasma respectively.

It Works

I had the exact same problem with the 42LG30. Remote suddenly stopped working. I followed the fix you described below and it worked! I'm dumbfounded as to why it worked but appreciate you sharing the fix. Saved me a lot of money!!
