Can't get my Bluray to set up correctly in multichannel

I purchased the Pioneer 23FD awhile ago and set the audio in the initial set up menu to DIGITAL via an optical cable to my legacy receiver, the vsx-1014K. Works great but I know there is more to be had in terms of sound quality (without buying a new receiver) by using the Bluray's multi channel outputs to my receiver.

That's the problem. I've connected the player's 5.1 outputs to the multi channel inputs on the receiver. I've gone back into the initial set up menu and chosen ANALOG for sound output but when I go into SPEAKERS and then choose MULTICHANNEL all I get is "This function cannot be used now." The menu won't let me make any changes and all I get is stereo sound.

Am I doing something wrong or could the player be the problem? This may have already been discussed in this thread. If not, could you lend a hand for the proper setup.

So you already turned audio over HDMI off? It may allow it to send audio via HDMI and optical at the same time, but I'd guess it won't let you do analog at the same time. It does sound like it is just a setting somewhere. What does the manual say about using the multichannel analogs?

Audio over HDMI was never turned on. VIDEO over HDMI is of course. I originally set audio to DIGITAL and used the optical out to my receiver. When I tried to change that to Analog to use my multichannel outputs, I couldn't get in to the sub menus for speaker changes. That's when I get the "can't use this function right now." Would disconnecting the optical out cable help?

According to the manual, there is a setting called "FIX" for audio out that will prevent you from adjusting the levels. This setting sets everything to MAX. It also appears that you have to have a disc in and playing to be able to adjust the levels, but I'd guess that "FIX" is on.

Thanks for your help but I've tried to modify the player's menu with both a disc in and without a disc. No luck. It does give an option for FIX but that is at the end of the menu. I guess a call to Pioneer is in order.

For anyone interested, you have to reset the initial setup menu first in order to enter new audio/video settings into your player. You reset the initial setup by depressing the STOP button and STANDBY/ON buttons located on the front left side of the player at the same time. Then you're free to enter new settings for either audio/video in the Setup Navigator.
