Digital audio

To get digital audio you will need a digital coax or optical cable from the DVD to receiver. Either will work fine. It sounds like your receivers default (and lable) are for the coax cable. No problem, all you need to do is use the receivers setup menus to identify the correct audio input to use for DVDs (i.e. optical #1, etc.) once this is complete, you should have no problem playing Dolby OR DTS 5.1 channel sound from DVDs.

Right now, your receiver is probably getting audio from the DVD via red and white analog audio jacks and using a mode like dolby pro logic to play the 2 channel sound track on 5 or more speakers.

Sony receiver defaults to coax input over optical for DVD, but that is changeable. My biggest complaint with the sony receiver is getting it set up correctly, the manual is crap. Take the easy way out and just use coax cable between the player and receiver. Spend your time figuring out the DVD player settings and receiver settings, which MUST be changed to get the system to work properly. Make sure the DVD is putting out digital signal, and turn the DTS setting to on. Make sure the reciever is set to accept the digital signal and properly handle it. When it is finally set correctly, you'll ask why will I ever spend money at a movie theater again :) ?

Most dvd players ship from factory, with the DTS turned off. Go into the dvd player's setup menus and make sure the audio output is set to "Bitstream", instead of PCM.

Your manual should walk you through re-assigning the digital inputs. Not hard to do.
Good luck!

Sony manual is difficult at best. I read a friend's Onkyo manual to get my Sony receiver set correctly!
